Research
POPPY Research and Development is a centre of excellence for research, education and training on issues relating to trafficking of women for sexual exploitation and women wishing to exit prostitution. Its work is funded by London Councils (formerly known as the Association of London Government).
Research
POPPY's unique position of conducting research about trafficking, alongside providing support and accommodation for women who have been trafficked, results in detailed and informed analysis that helps to shape public policy around prostitution and trafficking.
POPPY's most recent report, Streets Apart: Outdoor Prostitution in London (2007), critically examines the off-street sex industry. It highlights the urgent need for an expansion of the support services available to women involved in prostitution and the crucial need for educational and criminal justice deterrents directed towards buyers and potential buyers.
All of POPPY’s research reports are available to download from the publications page.
The research team’s current and ongoing research projects include:
- challenging the sale of and demand for sex in London and the UK
- ongoing research into how young women are groomed into prostitution
- continued mapping of the on- and off-street sex industry in London
- ongoing analysis of the statistics and information collected and recorded by POPPY Support and Accommodation and the POPPY Outreach Service
- producing objective country reports for use in asylum claims, including outlining the risks associated with returning victims of trafficking to their home countries
- carrying out research into the detention of women who have been trafficked
- further detailed research into the experiences and outcomes of trafficked women who have claimed asylum
- overview of recent cases brought against traffickers under trafficking legislation
- ongoing responses to consultations with reference to prostitution and trafficking.
