Taking action - ending violence against women

Campaigns

The End Violence Against Women campaign (EVAW):

Eaves is a member of End Violence Against Women (EVAW), a ground-breaking campaign representing 7million individuals and organisations across the UK all working towards lobbying the Government for an integrated ‘violence against women’ strategy.

As part of the campaign EVAW publishes an annual assessment of what UK Government departments are doing to tackle violence against women: Making the Grade. EVAW commends the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for scoring top marks for the second year running. The CPS is leading the way across Whitehall in developing a ‘violence against women’ strategy.

However, the overall score for Government departments was two out of ten. The report notes that other departments are still failing to take this issue seriously, meaning that policies on poverty, education and social exclusion do not make the connection to violence against women.

Prostitution:

The Lilith Project takes the view that prostitution is a form of male violence against women. By working with the media and giving talks, we are encouraging the public to debate the issue, and to rethink their perceptions of the concept of a woman ‘choosing’ to sell her body when there are no other options available to her.

Research has shown clear links between the sex industry and violence against women, exploitation and crime, and we are pressing public and statutory bodies to see demand – and the continued objectification of women in society – as the key issue in the prostitution debate.

Supporting women with no recourse to public funds: The Lilith Project is working with other leading women’s groups, including Southall Black Sisters, to protest against the ‘No Recourse to Public Funds’ requirement.

This requirement leaves women who do not have secure immigration status and who experience domestic violence with a stark choice: to stay in their abusive relationships or leave and risk poverty, destitution, financial and sexual exploitation.
